Packing a School Lunch

Jade is starting kindergarten next week. It is all day so I will need to pack a lunch for her. Seeing as I am completely new to having a school-age kid I am asking for help. I would love your advice on school lunch, what to pack, what works, what doesn't, and what you absolutly swear by. I would love any thoughts or advice you can give me.

P.S. I hope the girl's trip was awesome.

oh wow. school lunch... i kind of have a love/hate relationship with school lunch. last year i packed lunch for isa, but the boys ate hot lunch. (it grossed isa out--can you blame her?!) But, as residents we qualified for the reduced hot lunch, so for .40$ my kids could eat a hot meal (or at least pick at part of it).
in my experience, they get very little time to actually sit and eat. plus they are chatting and often overwhelmed by the whole cafeteria chaos so not a lot of actual 'eating' goes on. so, i limit what i put in there so it doesn't come home wasted or uneaten. for drinks, i do water. healthiest, cheapest option. i do a 1/2 sandwich, a little baggie of chips or crackers, a part of fruit (few apple slices, 1/2 banana, etc) then a 'treat'--like a frozen gogurt (which by lunch isn't that frozen, but still cold) or one cookie or a granola bar. keep it simple, give them treats and things they like because lets face it, all day being at school there is nothing more comforting than opening up that bag and feeling like your mom gave you an awesome lunch! i don't do a lot of individually packaged things just because they are expensive. i also make them bring home their ziplock baggies so i can reuse them.

yes, we want details on girls trip!!!!

Hi Maggie!

School lunches are a pain. A few tricks I've learned are:
1- lids on juice bottles that close really tightly (I bought the small plastic bottles of gatorade, washed them and removed the logo wrapper. That way if he accidentally threw it away - no big deal)
2- sandwiches in sandwich-shaped containers (and I even put them in sandwich bags too) so they don't get soggy or spilled on.
3- I love the snack size ziploc baggies. Chips, veggies, fruit etc.
4- I usually throw in a snack size candy bar, licorice or tootsie roll or something for a treat.
5- "disposable" bottles and containers that are sturdy enough for many uses- just in case they end up being accidentally thrown away! It happens ;-)

GIRLS WEEKEND WAS AWESOME! We missed everyone who didn't come :-(
