Oo, Oo, Me Next!

I have a question for everyone, too. Last week my doctor told me she was going to be out of town during my due date on vacation (this has actually happened 3 of my 4 pregnancies) and she offered to induce me this week. I have never been induced and was wondering what your experiences have been with it. I'm a little nervous about how I'll react to pitocin, but I'm already at a 4 so maybe it will go quickly? Why is this bothering me? I think anyone would kill to have the baby early, am I being silly? I actually had the chance to be induced with my last one, but chickened out. He ended up being 4 days late, BUT the whole labor and delivery was an hour and a half. Anyway, I'd like to hear from you all.

AnnMarie - go for it! I WANT to be induced so badly. I'm going to actually beg my DR to induce me! My thought is that if you are at a 4 already, they may not even need to use pitocin. Have them try the gels and stuff first. When they induced me for Charlie they gave me the prostaglandin gel and labor began immediately! They did end up having to use pitocin later b/c I wasn't progressing, but my situation was tons different. I was induced for HBP 3 weeks early and only at a 1 when they did it, Plus, b/c it was a vbac, they had to do things slowly and cautiously.

Anyway, I'm one of the ladies who would die to go early, but I can understand why you want to avoid pitocin. I'm surprised you've had 3 babies and have never had to have any! It does make the contractions stronger and more painful. Are you planning on doing this without meds? My epidural didn't work with Charlie and I could really tell when the pitocin kicked in. However, it did speed things along.

Good luck and keep us posted!! Also, could you email me your address? Thanks :)

I was induced with 2 of 3. I personally like letting things just happen but nothing wrong with being induced. When being induced the contractions do come on faster and harder but if you get an epidural its not a big deal. If you really like your doctor, then I think it is worth being induced. It is also nice being able to plan things. When you are induced you can just set up a sitter for your other kids instead of having to call someone in the middle of the night. I agree with Jenny prostaglandin might be enough (it was for me) or even just breaking your water (which also worked for me).

Good luck with whatever you decide. You really just have to do what feels right and is comfortable to you.

I usually don't recommend induction but since you are already at a 4 then I think it would be just fine. I agree with Jenny and Shelly to go for the prostaglandins and breaking your water first... Induction was a nightmare for me... but everyone is different. I also was not even dilated at all when they started me.. so i think my body wasn't ready, but yours is getting ready so that is a good sign! Go with your gut feeling.
good luck!

Annmarie,
you are being silly! go early. just kidding, you arent i know it is the fear of the unknown. see i have been induced with both and i am deathly scared of going on my own. my inductions went beautifully. i would recommend it. i went two weeks early with both. and both were easy and fast. but everyone has a preference. do what is best for you.

I was induced with prostaglandins with my first. Then they later turned on the pitocin. I was not on pain meds that time around. The contractions were horrible but the whole induction from start to finish was about 12 hours. Now with my second my water broke and I was dialated to aleast a three and they still put me on pitocin. I tried as much as I could without pain meds but had to finally cave. This was about 11 hours. So anyway back to the whole induction question, I don't think there was much of a difference with induction verses going on my own. I was stuck with pitocin on both and it took about the same amount of time. I get the feeling that nurses are pitocin happy and whether or not you have been induced they will put you on it no matter how hard you try to talk them out of it. So if pitocin is the only thing keeping you from getting induce go ahead and induce. Just try to get induced in the morning. Getting induced the night before is a joke. You deserve a good night's sleep before having a baby.

Ann Marie,
I was induced with both boys, electively. They won't induce me here in Denver and new research is showing that it is harder to go into labor naturally if you have previously been induced. I don't know how it works in reverse, but I had great experiences with both inductions. Everything went perfect and I didn't feel anything. Both labors were about 6 or 7 hours, but I started out not dilated at all with the first and only a one with the second. Good luck. Just do what feels right.

I was induced with all three. I have really loved it! Everything was just fine and I had painless delieveries-epidurals are great! I was dialated to a 3-4 when they induced Austin, and it only took a few hours after they started the pit...it was a breeze. I think if you have epidurals, it would be NO problem. I'm not sure I would do it if I didn't. We're excited for you guys! Hope all is well-good luck.

I went naturally with 2 and was induced with 2. Get induced if you can I say! My two natural ended up pretty much ALL natural because I went so fast. (Hence why they chose to induce me thereafter so I could give birth in a hospital.) I went in in the morning with my hair done, makeup on, (I definately looked better in the later 2 birth picts) They broke my water (I was also at a 4 with both) they watched that for 1/2 hour or so then they started me on a slow drip of Pit. After they started the drip they sent for the Anest. and I was given my epidural before the contractions even got bothersome. They were both born one an hour later the other 2 hours later. Absolutely pain free delivery!!! The first was cake and that is why I opted to be induced on the 2nd also. It was a beautiful thing! Best of Luck to you!!! What an exciting time!!! Joni
